武汉的地形也很有意思，人们常常说“武汉三镇”就是汉口、汉阳，武昌，发源于秦岭的汉水，在这与长江会合，把武汉一分为三，“一桥飞架南北，天堑变通途”。汉水桥，长江大桥，长江隧道又把武汉连成了一个整体。
武汉是长江下游的一个重要的港口，顾名思义，武汉就是个江城，武汉不但是交通要冲，也是长江中下游重要的文化、政治、经济中心之一自古就是人文荟萃的地方。屈子曾在这里行吟，太白曾在这里漫游。有关于江城这个名字的由来，首先还是是因为武汉本来就是长江经过，汉水与长江相交的地方。最重要的还是李白写的那一首诗了诗名叫做《与使郎中饮听黄鹤楼吹笛》，诗是这样写的：一为迁客去长沙，西望长安不见家。黄鹤楼中吹玉笛，江城五月落梅花。武汉人们喜欢“江城五月落梅花”的江城，所以自诩为江城人。
