故事从这里转折。由于基度一家生活在二战时期，且基度以及他们的儿子祖舒华都是犹太人，以致于他们被纳粹分子强行带到纳粹集中营，黛丽为了她的丈夫和她的儿子，也跟着一起去了。
基度为了祖舒华在童年里不留下阴影，编织了一个善意的谎言：他们只是来做个游戏，获胜者可以得到祖舒华梦寐以求的坦克。这对父子当时乐观的情绪与旁边人的绝望格格不入，即使每天都这么劳累了，基度回到集中营依旧笑脸迎对儿子。这是需要多大的耐心啊!即使疲倦得躺下就能睡着，但他仍然会逗儿子开心。浓浓的父子情，我穿过屏幕传递了出来，让我情不自禁地流下了眼泪。

电影开头，呈现出美国纽约的一片繁荣景象。那好似一个经济高速发展的年代，福特汽车生产的速度为90s/辆……然而我们的目光，没有停留在如蚁的汽车上，而是随着大气而悲壮的背景音乐，观赏驰骋于无边草原上的骏马。
股市的崩溃，给繁荣的华尔街带来一片阴霾。许多人倾家荡产，背井离乡……在这种背景下，电影将主人翁的故事娓娓道来。
一个失意的商人，妻离子散，颓废与孤寂围绕着他。其中有一个场景让人疼惜，那是他站在楼上，观看往来的情侣与踢足球的孩子,我们可以感知主人翁心中的失落，但也敬佩他身上的不屈。命运之神的眷顾，在他最失落的时候，遇到生命的另一半，重燃生命之火。
一个驯马师，爱马如命。挣扎在现实与理想之间。生活的压迫，没有让他颓废或是狂躁，他用冷静来成就心中那不平凡的梦。其中有一个场景，他从马主手中要下一匹受伤的白马，把他牵到林子中去，为它疗伤，带它散步，和它讲话。无疑，爱马如命的他知道如何了解马。
